ABOUT MELKAM CARE
“Melkam” is an Amharic word that is rich in meaning. On the surface, it is a word that simply means “good” - but in context it means much more. Amharic is the main language in Ethiopia, and throughout the Ethiopian culture you will hear Melkam used widely in phrases like “Melkam Gena” (Merry Christmas) or “Melkam Fasika” (Happy Easter). It is as word wrapped in joy and hope. Melkam Care is more than “good” care, it was created to be a place of joy, hope, and life for all of its residents and employees.
Melkam Care Adult Family Home is is run by Azeb Tefera, CNA (Azi for short) and was created to provide a safe, caring, comfortable place for elderly adults to live and thrive. Melkam Care is not just elder housing, it is a caring home for its residents, and includes medical assistance, personal care, and home cooked meals. For those with more acute needs, dementia and respite care are also available.

Azeb (or Azi for short) grew up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her husband, Serawit, spent his teen and college years on Whidbey Island. In 2012, Serawit moved back to Whidbey with Azi, where they have raised their family. Azi is a CNA and has a great capacity for caring and empathizing with her patients. Melkam Care exists as a direct result of Azi’s desire to provide dignity, respect, compassion, and quality care to those who need it.

We understand that leaving home is hard. That’s one of the reasons that a family care home is a great option for adults who can no longer stay by themselves. Our residents enjoy a clean, peaceful, and welcoming atmosphere in a real home - our home. We also understand that every resident has unique needs, and our goal is to provide tailored support to each individual.
Our house was originally built for our own family, so it has the feel of home. Additionally, we provide all of the comforts of home, like home-cooked meals and private rooms. We also provide things that home may not have included, like medication assistance and monitoring, housekeeping and laundry services, mobility transfer assistance, and coordination with healthcare providers. And for those with more specialized needs, we offer dementia care, respite care, and hospice support.
